What we fix

The four things every agency should be nailing.

Service-based businesses have their own tax quirks. These are the four we hard-wire for every agency that joins us.

IR35 contractor compliance

Full audit of your contractor network. Status determinations, contract reviews, defensible documentation, and a process that scales as you hire. We've saved one client £24k/year just on this.

Project-level profitability

Xero + WorkflowMax or Harvest wired up so you see gross margin per client, per project, per team member. No more "we had a good year" without knowing which projects actually made money.

Place-of-supply VAT

Overseas B2B clients, reverse charge, EU/US digital services. We set the invoicing rules correctly so you're not charging UK VAT where you shouldn't — and not missing it where you should.

Director extraction optimisation

Salary-plus-dividend mix, spousal shareholdings, pension contributions, director loan accounts, benefits in kind. We build the lowest-tax legal extraction plan — and revisit it every tax year.

What generalists get wrong

The mistakes most agencies pay for.

Generalists focus on compliance. Agency owners need an accountant who understands a service business with variable margin.

IR35 status left unexamined

You hire 5 contractors on similar terms, never revisit their status, then HMRC opens an enquiry and reclassifies all five. Retrospective NIC and penalties can be catastrophic.

Client-level profit invisible

Xero + a timesheet tool is a 2-hour setup. Without it, you can't see which clients actually make you money — and you keep servicing the wrong ones. Most generalists never suggest this.

VAT charged to overseas clients (wrongly)

Most B2B services to overseas clients are outside UK VAT scope. Generalists default to charging 20% — which costs you the sale or costs the client 20%. Either way, you lose.

Director remuneration on autopilot

"£12,570 salary + rest as dividends" was right five years ago. With spouse shareholdings, pension auto-enrolment, and optimal dividend ranges now shifted, the default can cost £2k–£6k/year in extra tax.

★★★★★
"We had 14 contractors on ambiguous terms. AudTax audited every one, cleaned up the docs, and restructured the two that were actually inside IR35. Saved us roughly £24k/year on NIC alone — and removed a huge compliance risk."

Common questions

Questions we hear from agency founders.

Can you audit our contractor network for IR35?

Yes — this is one of our most requested reviews. We assess each contractor individually against current HMRC tests (CEST + case law), produce defensible status determinations, and re-write contracts where needed. Fixed fee per contractor.

How do you handle VAT on overseas clients?

Most B2B services to non-UK business clients fall outside UK VAT scope. We set up your Xero to flag these correctly, add the right legal wording to invoices ("reverse charge applies"), and file it properly on your VAT return.

Can you integrate Xero with WorkflowMax, Harvest or ClickUp?

Yes — these integrations are how we get you client-level profitability. Time tracking flows into Xero, we map it to revenue, and you get a per-client / per-project gross-margin dashboard updated monthly.

Retainer vs. project billing — what's cleanest tax-wise?

Retainers are simpler for revenue recognition and cashflow; project work can spike your tax timing badly in a growth year. We model both for your specific mix and advise accordingly — plus help you set deferred revenue correctly.

How much does specialist agency accountancy cost?

Fixed monthly fees from £280+VAT for Ltd companies with 1–2 directors, £480+VAT for agencies with payroll and multiple contractors, £780+VAT for larger agencies with management accounts. All include HMRC enquiry defence to £5,000.
